What is Asperger's Syndrome?

Asperger’s syndrome is a developmental disorder falling within the autistic spectrum affecting two-way social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and a reluctance to accept change, inflexibility of thought and to have all absorbing narrow areas of interest.  These characteristics result in clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.  Asperger’s Syndrome, also known as Asperger’s Disorder, is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) characterized by severe and sustained impairment in social interaction, development of restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests,  and activities. These characteristics result in clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.  In contrast to Autistic disorder (Autism), there are no clinically significant delays in language or cognition or self help skills or in adaptive behavior, other than social interaction.

Many individuals with Asperger's are often first diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.  When the medication helps but there are still issues, they seem to be then diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder.  The third diagnosis that is commonly brought up is bipolor.
